Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State Tuesday commissioned the N229 million newly built Onikan Micro-water works, which is expected to boost potable water supply to Lagosians.
The new water works, which is the third in a series of 10 mini-micro water projects under construction by the Tinubu administration, is expected to complement the distribution network of Adiyan and his major water works along with the Iwanya and Ikeja micro-water works already completed in the first term of the present administration.
Head of Media and Publicity, Lagos Water Corporation (LSWC), Mr. Mark Adeyemi, who spoke with THISDAY, said "the Onikan overhead tank, which was abandoned for 37 years, now updated to a micro-water works after reconstruction and refurbishing, has the capacity to supply one million gallons of water per day to inhabitants of Military, Ajasa and Boyle streets, Mc Carthy, Beckley, Moloney, Igbosere as well as Awolowo road and Ikoyi."
Adeyemi added that "in all Lagos State has other 17 mini -water works" while explaining that “the ultra-modern water works is uniquely characterised by its large volumetric head advantage, resulting from the gravitational fall of water from an overhead tank of 500,000 gallons, placed at a height of 20 metres."
He said "the Onikan water works was built by an indigenous company, Natson Engineering Limited and supervised by experts from LSWC-led by the Chief Executive Officer of the LSWC, Mr. Muyiwa Coker."
He also noted that the water works "major components include two boreholes, sedimentation tank with three compartments, three transfer pumps, filtration system with three pressure filter tanks, underground concrete and two highlight pumps."
Other features, according to him, "include diesel storage and day tanks, a 300 KVA perkins generator and a 300KVA/415V transformer as well as electric control panels and water quality-monitoring laboratory devices."
Adeyemi said the troika of Onika, Dolphin and existing Ikoyi water works will boost significant water supply to the generality of Ijeh, Obalende, Dolphin Estate and Ikoyi.
“The micro-water works designed and built with World Bank supports has other features such as electrical control panels, chemical treatment with pumps and mixing tanks, water quality monitoring laboratory facilities, office space and store, security house, scavenging air blower and air compressor," he said.
