Rome - A 50-year-old Nigerian priest was recovering on Thursday after being stabbed by an assailant while taking an evening stroll by St Peter's Basilica in Rome.
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, Father John Okoro Egbulefu was walking with two priests along Via della Conciliazione, the main road leading up to the church, when a man on a red scooter stopped and stabbed him in the hip.
The reason for the attack was still being investigated by police.
Father Egbulefu is a teacher at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, a Roman Catholic institution founded nearly 400 years ago and whose main task today is to train priests as missionaries.
