5 killed in Cult Clash

At least five persons, believed to be students of Auchi Polytechnic, are feared dead following renewed violent cult clashes.

At least five persons, believed to be students of Auchi Polytechnic, are feared dead following renewed violent cult clashes.

A senior police officer told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auchi, that two others were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital for injuries sustained in the fight.

Although the police source could not readily name the cult groups involved, informed sources confirmed that the victims may have been members of the Vikings cult group.

Eye witnesses said members of the Black Axe had chopped off the arms of two of the deceased cultists and ripped open their skulls with an axe after bullets failed to penetrate their bodies.

They added that the corpses were later dumped in a ditch near Iru Umoru Street, where the incident happened.

NAN investigations showed that both bodies and two others, felled by bullets from cult members in Sabo, a student suburb, had been deposited at the mortuary in Auchi.

When contacted, the polytechnic's Public Relation Officer (Media), Mr Abraham Umoburie, said the incident took place outside the campus but he could not confirm whether those involved were students.

Meanwhile, a policeman is now lying critically ill at a private hospital in Auchi, after unidentified persons attacked him and took away his pistol.
Police sources disclosed that the man's car, a Mercedes Benz car had one of its side windows smashed by the hoodlums. Arrests are yet to be made in connection with these cases.
