DESPITE the relative short period that the Flying Eagles' players have had together to prepare for the World Youth Championship (WYC), the team's coach, Samson Siasia, has said there is a high level of understanding among the players, which is highly commendable.
DESPITE the relative short period that the Flying Eagles' players have had together to prepare for the World Youth Championship (WYC), the team's coach, Samson Siasia, has said there is a high level of understanding among the players, which is highly commendable.
He revealed that this was an indication that the team was ready for the championship, which kicks off in Holland on Friday.
Siasia, who spoke to The Guardian from the team's camping site in France after the 0-0 draw against Turkey, noted that the match brought out the best in his players.
He also said that the players showed that they were aware of the task ahead of them.
"I must commend the players for putting up a very good performance against the Turks. They are gradually playing as a team and I am sure that they will do well in WYC."
The former Super Eagles' player also said that the team's attack needed to be worked on to ensure that the chances that come their way in Holland were not wasted.
"Football is all about scoring goals. There is no way a team can win without getting the goals," he added.
However, the team must show that it is a disciplined side, if it hopes to go far in the championship.
The Brazilian coach, Rene Weber, confirmed this. The coach described the Nigerian team as talented but warned that it must be tactically disciplined to make any meaningful impact in the championship.
"Nigeria is a good side, very strong, and facing the team first makes it harder. Even though the African nations are not usually the most disciplined, two of the Nigerian players are based in Brazil and look very interesting."
The Flying Eagles, the current African champion, is drawn in Group F alongside Brazil, South Korea and Switzerland. It will play its first match on June 12 as the championship kicks off on June 10
