Two suspected armed robbers were killed in Lagos while attempting to rob a bank, in an exchange of gun shot with the police, while several others were injured.
Briefing the press on the success of his command in eradicating crime, Lagos Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Ade Ajakaiye, said the armed robbers, numbering about 30 in two buses and other cars, equipped with two giant Gas Cylinders, welding machines and other house breaking implements at about 1 a.m. on Sunday, attacked the new generation bank, along Itire Road, Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos.
The CP said the newly constituted Anti-Bank Robbery Strike Force moved in with other mobilised patrol vehicles, to dislodge the robbers and that the robbery attempt was successfully foiled after heavy exchange of fire with the desperate robbers.
"At the end of the fierce battle, two of the armed robbers were killed. Others managed to drag away their dead and fatally injured colleagues in hidden get-away vehicles."
Amongst items recovered from the robbers, according to the police boss, included one white Volkswagen bus and Peugeot 505 Saloon car, one Ak47 assault rifle, one baretta pistol, one AK47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
Others are 42 extra rounds of 7.62mm calibre ammunition, four empty AK47 magazines, two empty sacks believed to have been used to convey ammunition, two giant gas cylinders, one welding machine, one sledge hammer and hundreds of expended ammunition.
Ajakaiye said the two corpses found on the route of the escaped robbers were suspected to be innocents citizens, who must have been killed by the robbers during their operations.
He said investigation is on to ascertain their identities and that he had ordered the state Criminal Investigative Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos, to ensure this is done fast.
Thanking the public for their corporation and quick information on the robbery incident, the police boss said more of such information would always be appreciated by the police for total eradication of criminals in the state.
