Yabatech student dupes American N5m

A student of Yaba College of Technology has been held for defrauding a man in the United States of America of over N5 million, using a stolen credit card.

A student of Yaba College of Technology has been held for defrauding a man in the United States of America of over N5 million, using a stolen credit card.

Twenty-five year-old Korede Kayode Onamuti, aka John Jerry, was caught at the Surulere post office as he was picking some crystal photo products which he had ordered with the stolen card.

Detectives found out that when the goods were ordered from Ultimate Crystal Incorporation, Michigan, USA, Onamuti did not put in Nigeria as his country, he used Denmark or Finland because he claimed to be citizen of Denmark. Similarly, in the column where he was supposed to name his state, Onamuti entered ‘Surulere’. So, when the items got to Denmark, they were classified a postage error and sent down to Surulere post office in Nigeria.

First time out?
Onamuti, an Electrical/Electronic Engineering student told Saturday Sun that it was his first successful attempt at cyber crime.

Mr. Howe Curtis, owner of Ultimate Crystal Incorporation, who alerted the Nigerian authorities complained that Onamuti had ordered different goods using various names as Korede Onas and Kayode Korede.

The suspect, who has been detained at the state Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) said: “In using the credit card, I don’t have to know the name of the person. I just tried my luck on any 16 digits number and if the number is accurate, it will indicate order confirmed”.

Onamuti also said that for any order to be made, the name of the owner of the credit card must be known, the expiration date of the card must be known as well as the total amount.

“Each time he ordered for an item and it is sent, he would immediately make another order”, Curtis said, adding that in the process of ordering for these items, the name of the owner of the credit card is used and underneath the card, the suspect indicates his name and postal address, giving the victim the impression that the owner of the credit card wants to send it to them as gift. He said that in all items the suspect had received, it had always been indicated that they were gifts.

The suspect said that the credit card was generated from a software with the name ciwzod, a name he got through the internet.

Onamuti’s last victim was duped $40,000. The company was identified as Web Joints Corporation, based in South West Washington DC.

Police Investigators DSP Dayo Akinbisehin and CSP Dr. Ihuoma told Saturday Sun that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as the police concluded their investigation.

Sokari doesn’t mean joy. Joy is Biobela. Go to the village and ask the meaning of the name.
