It was the case of a rat pursuing a cat in the early hours of Wednesday as a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) took to his heels when a group of dare devil armed robbers stormed his residence in Iragbiji, the headquarters of Boripe Local Government of Osun State.
Daily Sun gathered that the hoodlums, numbering about eight, had stormed Otapete area of the town and broke into the DPO's compound with the intention to dispossess the occupants of their belongings.
However, the police officer, in his bid to live up to expectation, was said to have opened fire on the robbers, who promptly replied with a greater force. But the robbers had an upper hand in the gun duel. One of the occupants of the building was said to have been hit by bullets.
Having run out of bullets, the DPO reportedly fled. He allegedly jumped over the fence after which he made a distress call to a nearby police station.
But policemen from the station arrived minutes after the robbers had escaped.
The injured person was said to have been taken to the emergency ward of the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where medical personnel were battling to extract bullets lodged in him at the time of filling this report.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Joshua Olayemi, was not available when Daily Sun visited. But a senior police officer in Iragbiji, who pleaded for anonymity, confirmed the incident.
According to him, no arrests have been made so far, adding that efforts were on to apprehend the fleeing robbers.
