Bauchi State Chairman of the Action Committee on AIDS (SACA), Alhaji Aminu Abubakar, has identified ignorance and non-challant attitude, as some of the major factors responsible for the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Making the observation yesterday in Bauchi when the group visited the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC), Abubakar said lack of adequate information, behavioural adherence and erroneous beliefs have been responsible for the incessant spread of the scourge.
He lamented the alarming rate of the spread of HIV/AIDS, which ranks second within Sub-Saharan Africa with the prevalence rate of five per cent in the country or four to eight per cent in Bauchi State, with youth within the ages of 20 to 24 accounting for over 75 per cent.
Abubakar said no state can afford to be complacent over such youth debilitating disease, bearing in mind that the future of any society lies in its young ones.
According to him, this has forced SACA to encourage all ministries and parastatals to set up to ensure adequate dissemination of information on HIV/AIDS.
Abubakar noted with dismay the likely result of the pandemic on the state, explaining that it would further worsen the existing socio-economic problems that are confronting the people.
He then requested BRC's support in producing and airing jingles, programmes and drama that are capable of further informing people about the disease in order to reduce its spread.
Responding, the Managing Director of BRC, Alhaji Sani Ahmed, represented by the Secretary to the Corporation, Alhaji Uba Idris, commended the group for their effort at multi-sectorally addressing the problem, and encouraged them to intensify efforts at achieving their goal of reducing the spread of the scourge.
