Robbers kill five policemen in Nigeria

Daring robbers have shot dead five policemen and wounded many others in two separate incidents in Nigeria`s southern Edo and Anambra states this week, the local press reported Wednesday.

Lagos, Nigeria, 10/28 - Daring robbers have shot dead five policemen and wounded many others in two separate incidents in Nigeria`s southern Edo and Anambra states this week, the local press reported Wednesday.

Barely two months after armed robbers shot dead nine policemen in Benin, capital of Edo state, a group of 10 robbers camouflaged in police uniforms fired at policemen manning a checkpoint along the Benin-Akure road Tuesday, killing two and wounding three others, who later escaped into the bush. The wounded officers, feared dead, are yet to be found.

Confirming the incident, Edo Police spokesman Fatai Kinyomi said the motive for the attack was not clear.

Extra detachments of the crack anti-riot police were sent to the state after armed robbers shot dead nine policemen at two check points in August, but that seemed not have deterred the rampaging robbers.

In other developments, in Anambra three policemen escorting a bullion van along the popular Oguta road in Onitsha and officials of a leading commercial bank in the country, were shot dead by armed robbers Monday night.

The robbers, operating in broad daylight, snatched the bullion van and made away with a huge sum of money, which a local newspaper put at 20 million naira (N133 = 1 USD).

Armed robbers in Nigeria have recently turned their attacks on banks and bullion vans ferrying money across the vast country.

The police have yet to record any success in tracking down the robbers.
