Shell Nigeria sacks 22 managers

The Nigerian subsidiary of the royal Anglo-Dutch oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), has fired 22 managers as part of its ongoing reorganisation, the local press reported Wednesday.

Lagos, Nigeria, 10/28 - The Nigerian subsidiary of the royal Anglo-Dutch oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), has fired 22 managers as part of its ongoing reorganisation, the local press reported Wednesday.

The sacking, cutting across the company`s operations, has reduced the number of managers from 85 to 63.

"The evaluation of the managers in the re-organisation of Shell Nigeria operation has ended and 22 managers have been compulsorily retired," the report quoted an SPDC official as saying.

The reorganisation will next be taken to the middle and junior cadres of the company`s workforce, he added.

"This is the final level and it will end by mid-November," the official said.

According to the SPDC, the reorganisation, codenamed "Securing Our Future (SOFU)," is aimed at reducing operational costs and guaranteeing optimal performance.

It may entail the cutting of 4,000 jobs and the relocation of the company`s headquarters from the commercial city of Lagos to Port Harcourt, in the oil-producing Niger Delta, the base of the company`s oil-exploration activities.

The SPDC, incorporated in 1937, is Nigeria`s largest producer of oil and gas, producing almost half of the country`s 2.5 million barrels of crude daily.
