Okocha has been unable to access funds, said to be up to US$1 million, in the Nigerian bank, which is in trouble with the country's financial regulators. President Olusegun Obasanjo had assured the Bolton Wanderers midfielder that he would assist in the recovery of the funds during a reception for the national team after the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia. "Several months after the president promised to ensure the release of my money from the bank, nothing has been done to the best of my knowledge," Okocha was quoted as saying on a Nigerian football website. "The president promised to help but it now seems nothing will come out of this. This has stressed me and my family." When Okocha missed Nigeria's World Cup qualifier against Angola in June, there was speculation that his absence was intended to put pressure on the government to honour its pledge.
