The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, MOSOP, last week decried the activities of a mobile police team posted to a facility belonging to Shell Development and Petroleum Company, SPDC, in the area. A statement signed by Barbara Kpalap, MOSOP information officer, accused the mobile policemen of engaging in activities capable of sparking off communal conflicts in the area.

The mobile policemen were alleged to be assisting some section of youths from the area to violently assault other people in the area. "We are equally outraged that these mobile police are operating from a Shell facility in K Dere. After its recent admission by Shell that they contribute to conflicts in the Niger Delta, we expected that in one of the most sensitive areas in the Niger Delta, they would be capable of discerning the dangers of their actions," the statement quoted Ledum Mitee, president of MOSOP as saying.

MOSOP said the mobile policemen were originally posted as security guards to staff of Shell, mending a leaking pipeline but having stayed for more than two weeks in the area were now engaging in illegal activities. "We are calling for the immediate withdrawal of these policemen and an internal and external investigation into the underhand methods being used by Shell to secure access to the K Dere area.
