Abacha, a lesser evil, says Fawehinmi

LAGOS lawyer and human rights crusader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) has threatened to expose President Olusegun Obasanjo's alleged ongoing looting of the treasury.

LAGOS lawyer and human rights crusader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) has threatened to expose President Olusegun Obasanjo's alleged ongoing looting of the treasury.

Chief Fawehinmi who made the threat weekend, also described the late Gen. Sani Abacha's junta as a child's play when compared with President Obasanjo's regime in terms of corruption.

He spoke in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on his way to Kanke local government to attend the burial of his National Conscience Party (NCP's) former Vice Presidential candidate Mr. Jerry Gopye who died recently.

"What you people don't know is, Obasanjo in terms of corruption, is worse than Abacha. And I repeat it, he is worse than Abacha. You know they have known the details of Abacha's looting, but I tell you the details of Obasanjo's will soon be exposed to the Nigerian people," he further said.

While describing President Obasanjo as a failure, the activist alleged that the President who has long abandoned the oath he swore to provide jobs, good education, social security and quality health service, has allegedly only concerned himself with money "in a corrupt way."

According to him, "the president wants everybody to fend for himself and die. Everybody to himself, God for us all: that's Obasanjo's policy, while he is raking the money in a corrupt way. So, he is a corrupt man in everyway," he added.

Chief Fawehinmi accused Obasanjo of unduly using his office to amass wealth.

"You have seen the recent event of May 14 Library fund raising. How he has used his office to benefit privately. And there are many others," he stressed.

The human rights activist insisted that all the president's foreign trips were allegedly designed to further his (Obasanjo's) personal interest, and not necessarily to better the lot of the country as the impression is being created.

He said since President Obasanjo, has allegedly continued to flout the constitution of the country "on countless occasion", "he should be impeached by the National Assembly."

"If the National Assembly is alive to its responsibilities, this man should have been impeached a long time ago.

They should not allow him to spend the remaining two years. He should be thrown out of office," Fawehinmi stated.

Fawehinmi further alleged that Obasanjo's style of government was fast killing investments in the country, adding that the businessmen who are making it, were those overnight billionaires "who are donating N500 million and N250 million." "This man is receiving this ill-gotten money," he added.

On the ongoing political conference, Chief Fawehimi predicted that nothing good will come out of it.

"When people gather in a market place to shout and discuss, at the end of the market day, they disperse, what do you gain?" he added.
