LAGOS - Armed robbers have shot dead eight policemen and injured many more during an ambush in southern Nigerian state of Edo, a police spokesman said Wednesday.
The policemen were on patrol in the state Monday night when the bandits laid an ambush for them and opened fire on their vehicles, Fatai Kinyomi told AFP.
'Three policemen were killed at Ugbowo while five others were shot dead on the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi road," he said.
The spokesman said many policemen were wounded and were receiving treatment in the hospitals.
He said the bandits used sophisticated weapons during the attack.
'The expended ammunitions found at the scenes of the attack showed that AK-47 rifles were used," he added.
Kinyomi said the police authorities were 'saddened" by the attack and have launched a hunt for the robbers.
'We are on their trail. The law will soon catch up with them," he added.
