KING of lewd lyrics, fuji artiste Abass Akande aka Obesere has been appointed Director of Campaign and Entertainment for presidential aspirant Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida's IBB Vision 2007.
The news of the appointment was announced to journalists on Tuesday in Lagos by Alhaji H. Adekunle Makama, executive national chairman, IBB Vision 2007. Makama said the choice of Obesere was occasioned by the sterling qualities the fuji artiste had exhibited since be came into limelight. "We have a firm belief that Obesere can deliver when it matters most. His large followership was also taken into consideration before he was chosen. Obesere is one musician that has the interest of the country and that of our future president, Gen. Babangida, at heart. His humility is talk of the town, this is alongside his loyalty to a cause he believes in and above all, he is an artiste that has distinguished himself in his chosen career."
With this appointment, Obesere will be saddled with the task of organising rallies and ensuring that there is no dull moment at campaign venues. As head of a directorate, Obesere according to Makama, is in the party top echelon, "and he is a potential delegate that would be playing a vital role at the Eagle Square during the Delegates Conference that will give Gen. Babangida the nod of the party to become a candidate."
When asked if the musician may get a political appointment in the event of Babangida emerging president come 2007, Makama said. His words: "Don't let us put the cart before the horse. Political race is not religious one where someone's reward is awaiting him in heaven. In politics, your reward is right here on earth, it depends of your level of involvement. Obesere will definitely be rewarded for his effort at the end of the day."
Obesere in his speech thanked members of the IBB Vision 2007 for the confidence reposed on him. "I am a musician not a politician. Why I decided to take up this appointment was because I believe IBB is coming back this time around to take the country to its height. My involvement is for the good of the country. I am not in it for money as many people would wont to believe. Those who know me, know that I am comfortable. I am using this medium to tell my friends, colleagues too that they are free to approach me for anything as regards my new designation."
The musician revealed that an album extolling the virtues of IBB is on the way. "We are already in the studio."
