A Nigerian man died here and two more Nigerian mean fell seriously ill after the plastic bags containing amphetamines that they had swallowed burst in their stomachs, police said.
One of the men died over the weekend, while as of Tuesday night the other two remain in a serious condition.
Identities of the three men have not been released. The two surviving men will be questioned in connection with possible violations of the Stimulants Control Law once they have sufficiently recovered.
One of the three men spoke faltering Japanese.
"I live in Tokyo," he told the police.
Police said the three arrived at a Fujiyoshida hospital on Saturday night complaining of constipation and sore stomachs.
Suspecting something was afoot, the physician who dealt with the men X-rayed them, discovering they had each swallowed several hundred grams of speed packed into little plastic bags.
The physician notified the Yamanashi Prefectural Police, who analyzed the substance found in the plastic bags the men had swallowed and confirmed that it was amphetamines. (Mainichi Shimbun, May 25, 2005)
