Soyinka asks IBB to apologise on June 12

NOBEL Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said yesterday that former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, should apologise to Nigerians for insulting their sensibilities by annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

KADUNA - NOBEL Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said yesterday that former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, should apologise to Nigerians for insulting their sensibilities by annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Speaking at an interactive session with members of the Kaduna Discussion Group (KDG) in Kaduna, Prof. Soyinka described the speculated presidential ambition of Gen. Babangida as a tall dream. According to him, rather than dreaming of staging a coming back, Gen.Babangida should first apologise to Nigerians and seek their forgiveness. 'If he wants to start on a clean slate he must apologise to this nation especially for thwarting the democratic wishes of the nation," Prof. Soyinka said, adding: 'Even after his apology, he would have to represent himself for public scrutiny for Nigerians to decide."

Nigerians, Prof. Soyinka said, could no longer be taken for a ride, stressing that ruling this country in the past was not a condition that one has democratic credentials to seek election.

Prof. Soyinka, had at a different session with Northern progressives said that all progressive elements in the country were already mobilising to identify a credible presidential candidate for the 2007 election.
