Trigger-happy cop lynched in Nigeria

A trigger-happy policeman was beaten to death after killing two motorists in an argument over places in a fuel queue in the southern Nigerian city of Asaba, national radio said on Thursday.

A trigger-happy policeman was beaten to death after killing two motorists in an argument over places in a fuel queue in the southern Nigerian city of Asaba, national radio said on Thursday.

Fuel shortages have hit oil-rich Nigeria over the past month, causing long queues at petrol stations across the country.

State-run Radio Nigeria said the motorists were shot dead after an argument with a policeman who was trying to jump the queue at a petrol station.

It said the motorists insisted the policeman should take his turn, enraging the officer, who shot them dead.

The radio said angry bystanders pounced on the killer and beat him to death.

Nigerian police have a reputation for brutality and corruption.

On Wednesday villagers in northern Nigeria told AFP that a squad of officers burned down dozens of houses in a raid on a village, killing three residents too infirm to flee.
