Goods worth millions of naira were lost this morning, when fire razed 10 shops, at the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA) Shopping Complex, Abiodun Jagun Street, Ogba Bus Stop, Lagos.

The fire, which affected two cosmetic shops, a cold room, a pharmaceutical shop and a boutique among others, started in the early hours of this morning.

An eyewitness said the fire was caused by a high voltage surge, when electricity was restored to the area by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), this morning.

Although fire fighters, policemen from Area ‘G' and sympathizers made frantic efforts to put out the fire, most of the shops were completely razed. The distraught traders, most of them of Igbo extraction, were seen counting their losses this morning.

A young attendant in one of the affected boutiques wept uncontrollably as he claimed to have lost newly supplied goods and the sum of N600,000 to the fire.

'This is too tragic in a new year. Our goods, money and all that we could rely on in this new year, are gone,' he lamented, while showing some of the burnt naira notes to P.M.News.

A lady identified as Oyinbo, the owner of Lord's Frozen Foods, a cold room in the area, told P.M.News that she strongly believes God would restore their losses. 'As long as there is life there is hope,' she consoled herself.
