The Archbishop of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, has delivered a damning message to ‘prosperity' preachers in the country, declaring that God's wrath will fall on them this year.

Okogie, who spoke in Lagos, lamented that prosperity preachers lead the people astray and make them commit grievous sins. 'Most religious leaders today, seem confused about issues and policies of government. Hence, they claim to be performing miracles and preaching prosperity to confuse people the more.

'Make no mistake about it, when prosperity is overstressed, you blind the eyes of worshippers and make them forget the real God of miracles. 'They lead them astray and commit grievous sins. We call on such preachers to be ready for the wrath of God,' Okogie stated.

The outspoken cleric also took a swipe at political leaders in the country, saying God's vengeance would soon fall on them. According to him, many of them manoeuvred their way to the top by trampling on other people.

'Imagine what people do in our society, today, to get to the top; manoeuvring their way to the top, manipulating their way to the high table and even shooting their way to the throne.

'This message must sound irrational to the ears of those who must be first; those who must lead and control others. 'Yes, they are ready to crush the poor and trample on the weak; they are ready to kill and maim and subdue any obstacle on their way to the the top.

'We call on such people to be careful and change their ways for the year 2009 is the year of the Lord, the year of vengeance,' he stated. Okogie added that politicians had not learnt anything yet because of greed and their 'grab-grab' attitude, forgetting that they would die some day.

'Ours has become a country of liars and fraudsters! All because of the greedy few who think only about themselves. They should stop acquiring wealth to their detriment,' he warned.
