He made this observation during the end-of-year get-together organised for executive officers of Ward A of the Action Congress (AC) in Ifako/Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos state, in his Ogba residence.
Akande pointed out that the removal of immunity of the president, governors and other key political office holders in the country was not synonymous with the performance that would bring the dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of the Nigerian massess.
According to Akande, 'I consider the debate as a gross trivialisation of the problems facing the country. If the immunity of the president or governors is removed, will it bring food to the tables of Nigerians? Will it make electricity stable or abolish scarcity of food or bring about effective education and healthcare delivery system or stop the agitation in the Niger Delta?'
He noted that the problem facing the leadership in the country was not that of immunity, but corruption. In his words: 'Corruption is a by-product of a bad leadership that lacks focus and national interest. If a leader is well focused and has the interest of the nation at heart, he will deliver.
'And when a leader performs, the people would not care about immunity. The problem of corruption is not connected with immunity. All we need is a good electoral reform to bring in qualified leaders that have the interest of the nation at heart,' he said.
He advised the political class and policy makers to stop attending to trivial issues at the expense of the myriad of problems facing the country.
