The army has retired five Major-Generals and moved up 74 senior officers to Generals. Besides, 459 others were promoted between the rank of Captain and Colonel.
The army has retired five Major-Generals and moved up 74 senior officers to Generals. Besides, 459 others were promoted between the rank of Captain and Colonel.
The breakdown shows that 12 Brigadier-Generals were promoted to Major-General and 62 Colonels promoted Brigadier-Generals.
The promotions were made public yesterday in a statement by the army's Director of Public Relations, Brigadier-General Emeka Onwuamaegbu. He said the exercise, was in line with the recommendations of the Promotion and Carrier Review Board. It has been ratified by the Army Council.
The Department of Army Public Relations (DAPR) said: "Those who got promoted were given their promotion based on certain criteria for promotion and retirement which included vacancies, merit, deployability, number of promotion attempt, age ceiling on the rank and personal application".
According to him, the five Major-Generals were released on voluntary retirement, having attained the mandatory 35 years in service in consonance with the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service in the military.
In all, 158 Captains were promoted to Major, 174 Majors to Lieutenant Colonel and 127 Lieutenant-Colonels became Colonel.
The new Major-Generals are: E. D. Atiegoba, B. M. Monguno, E. E. Bassey, A. K. Amao, A. M. Jibril, B. S. Usara, B. C. Azurunwa, S. Y. Bello, S. U. Abdulkadir, B. B. Aindigh, C.E. Airhiavbere and A.U. Dambatta.
Some of the Colonels promoted Brigadier-Generals are L. Odunwa, A. Robinson, A. S. Mustapha, A. C. Olukolade and E. O. Ekpenyong.
While acknowledging the contributions of the five retiring Generals to the service, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Abdul-raham Dambazau, praised them for a job well done.
