The Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned the Chief Judge of the state, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and others to appear before the House, tomorrow, following the strike by judicial workers in the state.
Others to appear before the House are the Chief Registrar of the Judicial Service Commission and the leadership of the Judicial Workers' Union. The House wants those summoned to brief it on the judicial workers' strike which has entered its third week.
Hon. Babatunde Ogala (Ikeja) had moved a motion drawing the attention of the Assembly to the strike by the judicial workers in the state. The motion was moved under matters of urgent public importance which called for the intervention of the House of Assembly.
Ogala argued that the strike had deprived citizens of their rights and caused prison congestion, adding that people who had been granted bail could not enjoy the privilege as a result of the strike.
'This situation has affected court business,' he said, lamenting that the judiciary in Lagos and other states have been paralysed following the strike.
Ogala said people have been experiencing untold hardship and urged his colleagues to step in. He noted that the issue being canvassed for had a bottom line, adding that the Federal Government had stated that all branches of the union should meet their employers to resolve the dispute.
Other members who contributed to the motion urged the House to invite those concerned to find out the cause of the crisis in order to ameliorate the situation. Judicial workers had, three weeks ago, embarked on a strike over poor welfare conditions.
