Traders at the popular second-hand auto parts market in Ladipo, Mushin, Lagos, have blamed the closure of the market on the leadership.
Speaking on the closure, one of the stakeholders, Chief Mike Wisdom Nwosu, blamed it on the disunity among traders in the market. According to him, every trader wants to be a leader and that has caused incessant crises in the market.
Also commenting on the matter, Daniel Nwafor, owner of a warehouse in the market, said the Lagos state government should not be blamed for the closure, rather the traders should be blamed for failing to comply with the agreement they had with the government.
He appealed to the government to re-open the market immediately after the clean-up exercise. Marshal-General of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), Danjuma Maigeri, who was present to supervise the clearing of illegal structures in the market, told P.M.News that the market was closed because the traders refused to comply with the agreement they signed with the state government to get rid of street trading and clean the environment.
In his reaction, the President-General of the market union, Deacon Charles Obi, denied that it was the leaders of the market that were responsible for the closure. He said the central union of the traders made it clear that it had nothing to do with street trading.
Another businessman in the market, Charles Umeh, blamed the closure on the leadership. 'I warned the leaders three months ago on the dangers of street trading but they refused to listen. Now, everybody is suffering for their negligence,' he said.
