Oshiomhole weeps as aide is buried

Tears flowed freely from the face of Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as the remains of his late Personal Assistant, Mr. Greg Haruna were buried in Auchi, Estako West Local Government Area, Edo State.

Tears flowed freely from the face of Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as the remains of his late Personal Assistant, Mr. Greg Haruna were buried in Auchi, Estako West Local Government Area, Edo State.

Haruna died in an auto crash last Saturday.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Chris Nwachukwu, also died in the incident.

Oshiomhole moved the crowd to tears as he, in an emotional-laden speech at the late Haruna's lying-in-state, recounted his days with the deceased.

"I didn't know Haruna from Adams. He is nice and elegant. Haruna was not introduced to me. He volunteered to be part of the project which today has made me the governor. Haruna laboured day and night. We travelled round the villages. We knew we had enemies but we believed that God would not put us at the mercies of the enemy. Haruna was truly one of those young men who knew where they come from," Oshiomhole said.

He went on: "Whatever contribution that people made to us either by cash or bank, Haruna was the only signatory and I never had any cause to argue or question how he managed the finances. In a country in which everybody seems to be corrupt and dishonest, Haruna was there like an angel. Indeed, he gave me everything.

"He was the connecting rod. He knew all the players not only in this part of the state but across the state. He was the one who reminded me all the times of those who were with us at the beginning who abandoned us midway, those who joined us along the road and those who came when the harvest was ready."

Oshiomhole promised to take care of the families of the late Haruna.

He told his mother that he will not abandon the family.

The late Haruna was born in 1967 and studied Law at the University of Benin. He is survived by a wife and two children.

Others are his aged mother, five brothers and three sisters.

One of his cousins, Momodu Adedio, described him as a loving person who wanted the best for them.

"He always discuss with me before leaving for work. He was the light of the family. He was a good person who worked and struggled through pains to succeed. He was the only graduate in the family," he said.

Dignitaries at the funeral were Deputy Governor Pius Odubu, former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Roland Owie, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon. Pally Iriase and State Chairman of the Action Congress, Prince Tony Omoaghe, among others.
