Lagos to relocate Mile 12 market to Ikorodu


The Lagos State government said at the weekend that it would relocate the Mile 12 International and the Ajelogo Markets in Owode-Onirin, Agboyi-Ketu Local Government to Ikorodu.

The two markets are to form the take-off of the proposed Ikorodu Regional market, a 500-shop edifice sitting on almost 90 hectares of land on the Ikorodu-Epe Expressway.

The market, which architectural design is expected to begin within the first quarter of next year, will come with a large parking lot, a trailer park, a ram market and conveniences.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Fransisco Abosede, broke the news, while briefing reporters on the activities of his Ministry as part of the end of the year meet the press initiative at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

He said with the commitment of the government to giving a facelift to all markets, as is seen at the Tejuoso market, the Oluwole market renewal, and the Oyingbo markets, there would be tough sanctions against street trading or illegal conversion of premises or trading in kee clamps along the streets beginning from January.

Abosede stated that as part of the reforms put in place by the state government, any physical development in any part of the state must pass through a two-stage approval that must see the approval of not only the building plans, but also pass through building control to check the suitability of building components.

He added that the government would in the coming year continue with strict enforcement of all planning rules and regulations in its commitment to zero tolerance to building collapse.

As part of the building reforms, it is now compulsory for all developers of structures going above bungalows to have an insurance policy, and pass the building control sampling tests before construction.
