Killer-syrup: NAFDAC distributes antidote to hospitals

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has distributed antidote to reduce the toxic effects of killer-syrup, My Pikin, on the victims.

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has distributed antidote to reduce the toxic effects of killer-syrup, My Pikin, on the victims.
The antidote was distributed to hospitals were the children were receiving treatment.

They are on admission at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, the University College Hospital, Ibadan and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

"The agency has distributed the antidote to the hospitals in priority and other teaching hospitals nation-wide will be given as well," a statement by NAFDAC said yesterday.

The statement said three batches of My Pikin were contaminated with the deadly diethylene glycol and not one batch, it was learnt yesterday.

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said the three batches: 1708, 1808 and 1908 were produced around the same period by Barewa Pharmaceuticals, maker of the baby teething mixture.

It said the importer of the chemical, Mr. Dom Azumuka, who fled at the onset of the "My Pikin" saga, after a raid on his shop in Lagos, had been arrested.

The statement said following interrogation, Azumuka led NAFDAC officials to another suspected illegal chemical importer, Mr. Marcel Onyegbaram, where he allegedly bought the seven drums of the deadly chemical.
