The body of a Nigerian businessman, Mr. John Ekenne Ojike, who died in Guangzhou, China, after security agents assaulted him, arrived in Nigeria yesterday.
The body of a Nigerian businessman, Mr. John Ekenne Ojike, who died in Guangzhou, China, after security agents assaulted him, arrived in Nigeria yesterday.
His body was flown into the country through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos aboard an Ethiopia Airline aircraft. It was received by family members of the deceased amid tears and wailing.
The late Ojike, who died on October 8, in a Chinese hospital, was said to have been beaten with baton by Chinese policemen to a state of coma.
He was said to have died of injuries inflicted on him by the Chinese policemen.
His elder brother, Basil, told reporters in Lagos that the Chinese government paid the family N4.1 million as compensation when the Federal Government did not indicate interest in pursuing the case.
He criticised the alleged tardiness of Nigeria in handling cases involving the maltreatment of its citizens abroad.
Ojike noted that another autopsy would be carried out on the body in Nigeria as the previous one conducted showed that the deceased fell on a concrete floor and sustained wounds on his head.
Representatives of the Nigerian community in China and some family members accompanied the body to Nigeria.
