Political stalwart and former governorship aspirant in Lagos, under the flagship of the Action Congress (AC), Otunba Niyi Raheem, says community policing is the key to effective security in the country.He urged the Federal Government to introduce the concept.
Raheem spoke as a guest lecturer at the 2008 Annual Lecture of the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), held at the Police Officers' Mess, Ikeja, Lagos.
Speaking on the topic, Kidnapping: The Economic and Socio-political Implication On The Nigerian Economy, Raheem said community policing would effectively help to check the rate of kidnapping in the nation.
'I believe that to effectively check crimes like kidnapping, the Nigeria Police should be structured in such a way to allow for community policing.
'The advantage of community policing cannot be overemphasised, and it is one of the reasons why crime is easily detected in many developed countries,' he said.
Raheed said the agitation for the restructuring of the police in Nigeria has come in different ways, adding that while many believe 'we should have state police, some have advocated for regional or zonal police commands.'
