In its bid to put a stop to the snatching of cell phones in Lagos, the police have raided spots where second-hand phones, popularly called Tokunbo, are sold.

Their first port of call was the popular Computer Village in Ikeja. The raid is coming barely a week after the market was re-opened after a three-week closure by the Lagos state government, following the failure of the traders to pay their taxes.

Before re-opening the market, roadside phone dealers were banned from the market premises and their kiosks demolished. To further sanitise the market, the police, yesterday, raided the shops of some second-hand phone dealers. About seven of them were arrested and their goods seized. P.M.News gathered that most of the second-hand phones sold in the market were stolen.

A source in the market said those arrested are dealers who patronise phone thieves. He said most of the second-hand phones were stolen. Meanwhile, the market now wears a new look, as all the street traders and their stalls have been demolished. Police now patrol the market to ensure that the market does not return to its former state.
