Indian Arrested For Illegal Road Cutting

The Lagos state government has arrested 14 people, including an Indian, for cutting part of Ikorodu Road illegally.

The Lagos state government has arrested 14 people, including an Indian, for cutting part of Ikorodu Road illegally.

They were arrested yesterday, by officials of the state government. The culprits, including the Indian, Kay Ganesh, were brought to the premises of the Ikeja High Court yesterday, for prosecution, but due to the judiciary workers' strike, the case could not be heard.

Their offence, according to government, is punishable under the laws of Lagos state. Lagos state government has earlier vowed never to condone any act of illegal cutting of roads by individuals or corporate bodies, irrespective of their social status.

According to the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele: 'Governor Babatunde Fashola is prepared to bring the full weight of the law to bear on people who still break the law with impunity, especially in the area of damaging social infrastructure.'

He added that the state is not only a mega city where development is taking place, people should be wary of the fact that infrastructure is provided with tax payers' money and should be protected at all times.

'As a government that respects the rule of law, the arrested men, including the Indian, would be arraigned before a competent court of law whenever the striking workers resume work,' Bamidele said, adding that the latest move of government should be seen as a clear signal that it would not be business as usual for people who delight in taking the welfare of the majority for granted by inflicting pain and hardship on the people through damage to social infrastructure.
