As the January, 2009 ultimatum for commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) to wear crash helmets draws near, the Rotary Club of Ota, Ogun state, has concluded plans to assist riders in its environs with 200 crash helmets.

P.M. News learnt that the project is being anchored by a member of the club, Engr. Niyi Adedokun.

While briefing members of the club at its weekly meeting Saturday, Adedokun said the arrangement on the ground was for the helmets to be donated to the okada riders before the end of this month.

He further informed the meeting, including Ota Rotary Club president, Rotarian Ngo McDappa and his wife in attendance, that one helmet costs N1,000 and that a particular company has requested for N15,000 per helmet before he finally got another with the latest price of N1,000.

Adedokun said the immediate past president of the club, Barrister Oyayinmi, has been in touch with leaders of the Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State (MOALS), to ensure the success of the project.

Applauding the crash helmet project, members including Rotarian Leke Ibrahim, the president, his wife and others, pledged to buy a number of helmets to boost the project.

P.M. News learnt that the project will be launched in Ota at a later date to be announced when all arrangements must have been put in place.
