Lagos Shuts Eko Bridge Friday, For Repairs

The Lagos state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, will shut down a section of the popular Eko Bridge for three days, as from Friday, to allow for repair works on the Costain-Alaka axis.

The Lagos state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, will shut down a section of the popular Eko Bridge for three days, as from Friday, to allow for repair works on the Costain-Alaka axis.

The state government is to provide the manpower needed to prevent traffic congestion on the bridge while the Federal Government will provide the expertise and finance for rehabilitation of the bridge.

Acting Comptroller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works, Engr Godwin Eke, at a joint news conference this morning, said the bridge will be closed to enable the contractors fix one of the defective expansion joints whose length is seven metres.

He said the bridge will be re-opened for use on Monday morning and that the contract sum of the project was N6 million. LAMA Nigeria Limited is the contractor awarded the contract.

Special Adviser to governor Babatunde Fashola on Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, said the contractor handling the project would start putting up diversion signals on the bridge any moment from now.

He said vehicles wanting to use the bridge could go from Apongbon through Costain to Alaka in order to beat the traffic, adding that LASTMA officials would be on ground to direct traffic.

Opeifa added that the federal and state governments had put machinery in place to ensure that all defective bridges in the state are rehabilitated, beginning from next year.

LASTMA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Young Arabame, told newsmen that LASTMA officials would fully be on ground to ensure that motorists do not break traffic laws.

The federal government had in August, shut down a section of the Third Mainland Bridge for a month to carry out some repair works on the bridge.
