Edo state governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, has vowed to expose and bring to book all past leaders of the state that have embezzled and looted the state's treasury.
Oshiomhole, who kicked against all manner of corruption, also said he has seriously warned all members of his cabinet against corrupt tendencies and acts inimical to the progress and development of Edo state.
'I was elected by the people; the victory at the court is theirs and not of any godfather's. So, I should be seen as serving the people and make them feel the impact of governance in our dear state,' he stressed.
The erstwhile chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress said this on Wednesday, when he visited Kaduna to attend the annual conference of the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, at Hamdala Hotel. Governor Oshiomhole spoke vehemently against leaders using their positions to steal public funds, thus undermining the development of the governed.
He described as unfortunate, a situation where some state governors and local government chairmen levy people to pay high taxes, yet there is nothing to show for what they have collected from the people. He added that 'in some cases there were no proper accounts for the collection and spending'.
According to him, petty traders in Edo have been ordered to stop paying taxes. The reasons for this action, he pointed out, was to create wealth and make life more meaningful for the people. 'When a pure water seller is told to pay tax, how does such an individual survive,' the governor asked.
He charged the leadership of the textile and tailoring garment union not to relent in their effort to ensure that the collapsed textile industries in the country are brought back on stream for optimum production. He noted that the problem of unemployment can be solved if the textiles industries are encouraged to produce.
