Three members of a 15-man gang of notorious trans-border robbers, have been gunned down by the police. They were killed while attempting to escape arrest from their hideout, at Idi-Iroko.
The bandits had reportedly engaged men of the Ogun State Police Command in an exchange of gunfire. Items recovered from the robbers, whose identities are yet to be confirmed as at press time, include a Bajaj motorcycle with Lagos registration number QJ 080 KTU, a locally made double barrel gun and six live ammunition.
P.M.News learnt that policemen invaded the hoodlums' hideout, at Alaari, Idi-Iroko, in Ogun state, after they received a distress call that the robbers had allegedly snatched a car at gun point. The bandits, P.M.News reliably gathered, specialise in all forms of crime including car jacking, burglary, bank and highway robberies.
It was learnt that membership of the gang comprised both Nigerians and foreigners and the police believe it is responsible for the various robbery operations in the western part of the country. The bandits often rob in Nigeria and take their loot to neighbouring Republic of Benin and Niger Republic to sell.
The police were said to have been on their trail for a long time before luck ran out on them, a police source informed P.M. News, adding that the deceased were among the 15 robbers who had gathered at Alari, Idi-Iroko, Ogun state, ostensibly to deliberate after they had driven newly stolen vehicles across the border.
'The policemen had stationed themselves at the place while the robbers were deliberating. Some of their members were keeping watch and opened fire immediately their guards sighted the policemen.
'In the ensuring gun duel, three members of the gang were killed, while others fled with bullet wounds,' said the police source. P.M.News reliably gathered that investigation is ongoing to arrest fleeing members of the notorious trans-border robbery gang.
