Four operatives of the Lagos state environmental enforcement agency, KAI Brigade, have been attacked by street traders, in Maryland.
The incident occurred when the KAI officials tried to dislodge the street traders. The officials, who described the traders as those bent on destroying the beautification project going on in the area, said they were attacked with dangerous weapons, such as stones, bottles and sticks.
Speaking with P.M.News on the attack, the Deputy Commander of KAI, Olusola Oyeyemi, who was also injured in the head, stated that their mission was to chase the traders off the highway, but they were surprised when the traders attacked them. Oyeyemi disclosed that but for the mature way he directed his men, the situation would have resulted in more casualities.
Reacting to the development, the head of the outfit, Captain Danjuma Maigeri (retd.), described the attack as barbaric and inhuman. 'It is now a total war on all manner of street trading and those behind it. Street traders in Lagos state must look for convenient alternatives to carry out their illegal businesses. We are going to go after them,' he said.
P.M.News gathered that 28 street traders arrested during the attack, would soon be charge to court. The KAI officials who suffered injuries include the Deputy Commander, Olusola Oyeyemi; Lasasi Kazeem; Omosola Atolabi and Oluwaseun Amore, a mobile policeman attached to the outfit.
