4 LASU Students Shot

A police constable who allegedly shot four students of the Lagos State University, Ojo, while they were coming from Epe, Lagos, has been arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Magistrate's Court, Yaba, for attempted murder.

A police constable who allegedly shot four students of the Lagos State University, Ojo, while they were coming from Epe, Lagos, has been arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Magistrate's Court, Yaba, for attempted murder.

The suspect, Constable Benjamin Olusegun, was alleged to have shot at a coaster bus conveying the students who went for a bursary interview at Epe. The culprit, it was learnt, shot at the bus because the driver refused to pay ‘toll' to him and his colleagues at a junction, near Epe.

Two of the students, P.M.News gathered, are now in critical condition, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba. The remaining two are said to be receiving treatment in another hospital in Epe. Police authorities confirmed that the suspect has been apprehended and dismissed from the service. Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Frank Mbah, said the measures taken against the culprit would serve as a deterrent to others.

According to Mbah, who was in court when the accused was arraigned: 'At about 8.30 p.m., on Monday, a convoy of five coaster buses were conveying students of LASU. One of the buses stopped in front of an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). The APC was stationed at a T-Junction in Epe. And under circumstances yet to be determined, the policeman opened fire on the bus, hitting four students.'

'Two of them were critically wounded and have been taken to LUTH, Idi-Araba, and the Ikeja General Hospital. We've been taking care of the injured. We made sure the policeman passed through all the trials. 'We will not condone our officers and men making such mistakes,' Mbah stated.
