The incidence of law enforcement officers beating up innocent citizens went up another notch recently, when a Niger Delta youth leader, Prince Dafe Atua, was almost beaten to death by mobile policemen attached to a bank.

Atua's supposed sin was that he insisted on his rights when a senior female official of the bank hit his vehicle from behind. Narrating his harrowing ordeal in the hands of the five policemen attached to the bank after five days in coma, Atua, who is the Director of Mobilisation, Niger Delta Youth Development Initiative, said the senior female official of the bank, located in Ajah, instructed the policemen to beat him up.

According to Atua, he was coming out of the bank in his car in company of his wife, Joy, when suddenly the female bank official's car hit his car from behind, damaging it. But instead of accepting her fault, she called on the policemen attached to the bank to get him and his car off the road. When Atua insisted on his rights, the policemen descended on him, hitting him repeatedly with the butt of their guns.

The beating lasted for almost an hour before a police inspector from Ajah police station, came to his rescue, but not before he had fainted and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The matter has been formally reported at the Ajah police station, and Prince Atua's lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police on the matter. The bank has also been notified and its response is being awaited before further legal action is taken.
