Manchester City are planning a sensational move for Nigeria international and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi in a bid to provide adequate cover for their ailing backline.

The money-spinning club which have already signed Tal Ben Haim and Shaun Wright-Phillips have also been linked with several Chelsea players in recent weeks including John Terry and Ashley Cole. And having nicked Robinho from theBlues, the Mark Hughes' side is reportedly being urged to plunder Stamford Bridge for Mikel.

In his weekly column in a leading tabloid, Terry Venables has urged Manchester City (probably the richest club in the world) to go for the former Lyn Oslo player now playing his best football since joining the former England champions in the summer of 2005. Mikel is stated, by El Tel, as being the best in his position (better than Claude Makelele) and his signing would provide the City defence with the protection they crave whilst also offering a real signal for intent regarding their future intentions.

Meanwhile, news emerging from Stamford Bridge suggests that Chelsea would do anything to stop Mikel from going to Manchester City or any club at that in the winter. The Blues have sternly warned El Tel to desist from publishing further reports capable of fuelling Mikel's transfer from Stamford Bridge.

Mikel has been playing the defensive midfield role for the club with aplomb since Michael Essien suffered an injury that will keep him out of action till January.
