Policeman on trial for shooting LASU students

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a dismissed policeman, Mr. Benjamin Olusegun, on a four-count charge of attempting to kill four students of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos.

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a dismissed policeman, Mr. Benjamin Olusegun, on a four-count charge of attempting to kill four students of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos.
Olusegun, who was arraigned yesterday before Magistrate Mrs. Abegunde David at the Ebute-Meta Magistrate Court, had spent five years in service.

He was said to have shot at Bashiru Sanni, Balogun Adewale, Wole Oguntimehin and Adekoya Qudus at a checkpoint on the Lekki-Epe Expressway on Tuesday.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Abdulsalam Alabi, a Chief Superintendent of Police, prayed the court to remand the suspect in custody.

He also pleaded that time should be given to enable the police to close its investigation.

Counsel to the complainants, Mr. Lukmon Shopeyie and the Legal Officer of the University, Mrs. Olajumoke said the university was not pleased with the unfortunate incident and "LASU students would not be victims of police errors."

The suspect, who had no legal representative, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He also requested to speak to his family members and relatives before he was transferred to prison custody.

The case has been adjourned till December 19 for further hearing.
