Don Laments Falling Standard Of Education

The chairman, Board of Trustees of the University of Lagos Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA), Prof. Idowu Sobowale, has lamented the falling standard of education in the country.

The chairman, Board of Trustees of the University of Lagos Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA), Prof. Idowu Sobowale, has lamented the falling standard of education in the country.

He made the observation at the first UMCAA Awards last weekend, in Lagos. “Let me remind you that unlike in our days when the entire class would have second class upper divisions or you could go straight from graduation to the field and excel, things have changed. Things are now much the other way round,” he noted.

The chairman, who is also the president of the association, remarked that the event was organised to bring the department’s alumni together to enhance its growth and development as well as develop a strong relationship among the alumni.

According to Sobowale “the challenge before us is huge. We need both human and material resources. We also need to bridge the gap between town and gown so that UNILAG Mass Communication graduates can really be ready-to-use once they graduate,” while urging members to work together to keep the glory of the department and take it to greater heights.

Those honoured this year for their outstanding contribution to the profession were randomly picked from four generations of graduates, from 1969 to 1990. They include the Managing Director and Editor-In-Chief, TheNEWS/P.M.News, Mr. Bayo Onanuga; former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh; Mumuni Alao of Complete Sports; Mr. Dele Alake, former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy; John and Sola Momoh of Channels Television; Dan Agbese and Yakubu Mohammed of Newswatch and a member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, among others.
