The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has condemned what it described as the humiliation of the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
Ribadu was, last Saturday, prevented from graduating at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos.
'The treatment meted out to the former EFCC boss clearly showed that neither the management of NIPSS nor the unseen hands behind Ribadu's travails had strategic thinking of their actions,' the group stated.
CD lamented the absence of official explanation on Ribadu's harassment at the ceremony, adding: 'It is quite absurd that a Nigerian of Ribadu's status would be made to go through a course, fulfil all the conditions for graduation, only for some goons to come and bundle him out of the graduation ceremony with his family and relations.'
CD described, as an irony, the fact that the former anti-graft helmsman was bundled out of the venue of the graduation ceremony when the likes of James Ibori, former governor of Delta state, has not been brought to book to account for his looting of the state.
'The message from all this is clear; the system will only tolerate the Farida Waziri approach of treating corruption with kid gloves. Or to put it more aptly, the only war against corruption permissible is the mockery of it by an agent of corruption itself,' CD claimed.
The organization asserted that the Yar'Adua administration had lost its fight against corruption. 'Let the Yar'Adua administration ask the police to meet Ribadu in court and sort out whatever they have with him. To continue to resort to gestapo style to deal with him, makes nonsense of the rule of law mantra,' CD added.
