The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA, has shut down over 50 illegal health facilities in the state for various offences bothering on substandard medical practices.
The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA, has shut down over 50 illegal health facilities in the state for various offences bothering on substandard medical practices.
The offences range from quackery, unofficial training of auxiliary nurses, existence of livingrooms within the facilities, lack of qualified personnel, poor facilities, unhygienic environment, to non registration of the facilities with the Agency.
The Chairman of the Agency, Dr. Bambo Oyekan, who led the week-long closure exercise that covers local government areas such as Lagos Island, Alimosho, Ikorodu, Agege, Kosofe and Mushin, explained that the affected health facilities include Babs Medical Centre, 33, Isale Agbede Street, off Idumagbo Avenue, Lagos Island; La Peak Medical Center, 65, Aroloya Street, Lagos Island; First Choice Medical Center, 102, Iga Iduganran Street, Lagos Island and Subola Monsuro Medical Center, 44, Docemo Street, Lagos Island. Oyekan further listed Arafat Hospital, located at 152, Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, Idumota; Danbis Clinic, located at 109, Alakoro Street, Idumota, Lagos; Asiata Abake Memorial Hospital, at 14, Bridge Street, Lagos; Clifton Hospital, 408, Ikorodu Road, Ojota; Fellowship Hospital, 2, Anike Apena Street, Lagos; The New Agege Hospital, 35, Shiaba Street, Agege; Omoyeni Clinic, located at 16, Adejobi Street, Oke-Koto, Agege and Aduragbemi Hospital, at 45, Fakoya Street, Akowonjo.
Others, according to him, are Doctors Clinic, at 7, Egunjobi Street, Shasa; Golden Victory Way Clinic, at 11, Lawal Street, Moshalasi Bus Stop, Shasa; Neighbourhood Specialist Clinic, located at 2, Oyebo Street, Ojota; Alpha Medics Laboratory, at 38, Adedoyin Street, Kosofe, Mile 12; Mothers' Pride Hospital, 45, Lasunwom Street, Odogunyan, Ikorodu; Focus Laboratory, 61, Ayangburen Road, Ikorodu; Aduragbemi Maternity, 15, Aduragbemi Street, Agric Bus Stop, Ikorodu and Royal Medical Laboratory, 591, Ikorodu Road, Mile 12, Lagos.
The agency had earlier shut down Olaoluwa Medical Clinic, located at 7, Owode Street, Abule Egba; Mankind Medical Centre, at 12, Jimoh Street, off Abeokuta Expressway, Meiran and Bepo Exact Medical Centre, at 610, Abeokuta Expressway, Ijaiye.
The Chairman stressed the need for all operators of health facilities in Lagos state to ensure that such facilities were duly registered and manned by qualified health personnel, to ensure the annual accreditation of all health facilities operating in the state and to enforce the availability and use of adequate and appropriate instruments/equipment in health facilities in the state. Oyekan noted that many medical doctors have been bastardising the medical profession by recruiting auxiliary nurses and unqualified personnel, thereby bringing the profession into disrepute, as well as endangering the lives of innocent people who unknowingly patronize the health facilities.
