THE 27-member Imo State House of Assembly has passed a bill renaming the Imo State University as Evan Enwerem University.

After a series of debates and committee stages chaired by the deputy speaker of the house, Chief Jonas Okeke, the bill was passed after it went to the committee of the whole house presided over by the Speaker, Chief Goodluck Opiah.

The bill which is to be assented to by the Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim provides that Enwerem, a past governor of the state, but now late, should have the institution bears his name.

The Guardian learnt that Imo State University was relocated to Owerri during the regime of Enwerem in 1991.
