The Director-General of the National Agency For and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili, who was among the ministerial nominees screened by the Senate, yesterday, acquitted herself creditably when she appeared before members of the upper legislature.
Answering questions from the senators, Prof Akunyili said the unity and safety of Nigerians is paramount to her, and promised to perform creditably in any position she finds herself.
'I will try my possible best to manage any situation I find myself. As a grassroots woman, I have acted in various capacities. I have been in the civil service. I also built a hospital for my husband's community, in Anambra,' she stated.
When asked what would be her priority if she was assigned the health portfolio and how she would tackle the professional rivalry in the health sector, Prof. Akunyili said: 'If I am given the health ministerial post, my target is to focus on health and that is to get the hospitals and health centres in the country working.
'If they are working, I am assuring you, we have got it right. On the rivalry in the sector, it is being done out of ignorance. Everybody must understand his/her own job and it must be done with total sincerity. Right from the cleaner to the man at the top, duties must be spelt out. All of us, the pharmacists, midwives, doctors are stakeholders in the sector, all hands must be on deck,' she stated. At the end of the session, the Senate President, David Mark, asked the woman to take a bow and leave.
