A 42-year-old unemployed man has been arrested by the police and detained over the death of his wife.
A 42-year-old unemployed man has been arrested by the police and detained over the death of his wife.
The suspect, John Mebele, an indigene of Delta state, lives at 2, Okemeji Street, Oshodi, Lagos, with his late wife, Mrs. Justina Mebele, 32. Police sources, at Akinpelu police station, confirmed to P.M.News that the suspect was arrested following a report lodged by the relatives of the deceased that the suspect killed her during fighting.
But speaking with P.M.News at the police station, John Mebele said: 'I have been married to her for five years. The problem started when she asked me for money to buy food and I begged her to endure with me since she knew that I lost my job two years ago.
'I had N100 on me, so, I gave her N60 and I held on to N40. I said since we had garri and noodles in the house, manage these with your one-year-old baby, but she refused to heed my pleas. She became stubborn to the extent that she blocked my way when I wanted to go out to look for a job.
'I got annoyed and beat her silly. As she fell, I sneaked out of the room. When I returned home in the evening, I learnt that she died when she was being rushed to the hospital. 'Her brother also came to my house and beat me up, saying that I caused the death of his sister.'
The incident is currently being investigated by Sergeant Ndubuisi Okorocha, at the Akinpelu police station, Oshodi. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Frank Mba, confirmed the incident.
