An Ikeja Magistrate's Court has sentenced an accused, Albert Oludare, 52, to a 17-month imprisonment, with hard labour.
He was arraigned on a two-count charge of unlawful and malicious damage to a structure, and stealing. The accused was said to have destroyed a canteen, valued at N270,000, located at Leisure Bus Stop, Oke-Odo, Lagos, belonging to Idayatu Durojaiye, on 22 February, 2005.
He was also accused of stealing N7,500 and some assorted drinks worth N5,000. The first charge is punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.31, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 1994.
The second charge is punishable under Section 390 (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.31, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 1994. The accused was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment for the first charge and seven months for the second charge. The sentences are to run concurrently.
The magistrate, Mr. W. B. Balogun, said the accused has not shown any remorse for his action and needs to be taught a lesson to respect the law and other people. The accused tried to escape from the court before the judgement was read but he was caught by security personnels attached to the court.
