A woman, Hope Anamene, in a fit of uncontrolled anger, has allegedly hit a five-month-old baby's head with a pestle.
P.M.News learnt that Hope, who is also nursing a three-month-old baby, intended to hit her rival, Esther Nwosu, with the pestle during fighting, but Esther dodged it and the pestle hit her five-month-old baby, Chiamaka, who was strapped to her back.
Investigations revealed that both women reside at 17, Ezeagwu Street, Ajegunle. A heated argument between the two women, last Friday, reportedly degenerated into violence and it resulted in baby Chiamaka being the victim. The impact of the pestle has left a permanent dent on the baby's head. Narrating what led to the fight, Esther's husband, Ifeanyi, told P.M.News that Hope and other neighbours had always been gossiping about his wife, adding that Hope, in particular, was fond of picking quarrels with his wife.
'There was a time she wanted to pour hot water on Chisum, my first daughter, but my wife was able to keep her away from the woman. While she was arguing with my wife, she threatened to slap her,' he said.
Ifeanyi explained further that the matter was reported at the Olayemi Police station, Ajegunle, but Hope was released on bail. He added that the baby's condition was critical because when he took her to a private hospital, he was referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.
Ifeanyi vowed that he would take Hope to court, as she and her husband had not shown any remorse. 'The husband vowed that he would deal with us to prove that he was from Okija and his wife, a yoruba woman, is from Ondo state,' he said.
But Hope denied hitting Chiamaka with a pestle. She explained to P.M.News that Esther had always provoked her and she had been very patient with her.
'She was always making provocative utterances at me. On the night we fought, I was preparing egusi (melon) soup and it got burnt. She started making some statements, cleverly directed at me. When I challenged her about her comments, she started abusing me and we started fighting,' Hope said.
Hope added that at the police station, Esther claimed that she hit her baby. 'I actually fought her, although I should have been more patient,' she said. Efforts by P.M.News to speak with the DPO of Olayemi Police station proved abortive.
