A 26-year-old provision dealer has been arrested by the police, at Ikotun, for allegedly raping an 11-year-old housemaid.
The suspect, identified as Chidube Olisa, was alleged to have raped the victim (names withheld), in an uncompleted building, at Agodo, Egbe, a suburb of Lagos, when her uncle sent her to buy an item in his shop.
P.M.News gathered that the incident occurred around 9 p.m., when the girl's uncle asked her to buy an item from the accused's shop. Instead of selling the item to her, the accused reportedly forced her to an uncompleted house near the shop and had carnal knowledge of her.
P.M.News learnt that when the victim returned home, around 11 p.m., her uncle, who was waiting for her, noticed blood on her dress. When he asked what happened, the little girl told him that she had been raped.
P.M.News learnt that the girl's uncle, Kelvin Nzekwe, quickly contacted the police and the suspect was arrested and charged to the Ejigbo Magistrate's Court.
The accused was charged with having forceful carnal knowledge of an underaged girl, an offence punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail by Mrs. M.I. Dan-Oni, after warning the girl's uncle to be prepared to follow the matter to a logical conclusion.
The court granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties. The court also ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and must have means of livelihood. The matter has been adjourned till 10 December, 2008, for trial.
