The University of Ibadan (UI) has graduated a total of 1,615 degree students for the 2008 academic session. Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Olufemi Bamiro, also revealed that 83 out of the 88 undergraduate programmes in the university have received full accreditation from the Nigeria Universities Commission.

At the graduation ceremony of the institution, recently, Bamiro stated that five programmes have interim accreditation status, assuring that the university would not rest on its oars to ensure that it maintains the leadership role in the provision of university education in Nigeria.

He urged the graduands to regard their certificates as a springboard and a call to greater challenges in life, stressing that apart from learning everyday, they should be aware that they could not sow and reap the same day.

Pointing out that white-collar jobs were not easy to come by, he urged them to be creative as they engage in ventures that liberate their inner potential.

According to him: 'The graduands are from the faculties of Arts, Science, Basic Medical Science, Clinical Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Technology and Law. In all, a total of 1,615 from these faculties are being awarded degree certificates. Of this number, 533 are from the Faculty of Arts (including affiliated institutions), 9 of them with first class honours and 196 with second class Honours (Upper Division).

From the Faculty of Science, 519 students graduated. Out of these, 19 have first Class Honours while 97 have second Class (Upper Division).

The Faculty of Clinical Sciences presented 145 graduands, while the Faculty of Dentistry presented 14 graduands. From the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, there were 63 graduands. Of this number, 11 had second Class (Upper Division) degrees. The Faculty of Pharmacy presented 32 graduands, while the Faculty of Technology presented 173 graduands.

Of this number, 9 graduands had first Class Honours and 57 passed out with Second Class (Upper Division). The Faculty of Law presented 117 graduands and, of this number, one made First Class Honours and 49 made Second Class (Upper Division').

He implored the graduands to be worthy ambassadors of their alma mater in whatever capacity or professional service they might be engaged in, adding that they should keep the flag flying as products of the institution where academic excellence is the watchword.

Bamiro said the noticeable increase in the number of First Class and many more Second Class Upper Division graduands was a manifestation of the efforts geared towards improving the academic standard of the institution. However, governor Adebayo Alao-Akala was unavoidably absent because of the wedding ceremony of his daughter, in Ogbomosho.
